The celebration of the full moon, also commonly called Esbat among Pagans and Wiccans, is an ancient tradition of many cultures throughout the world and ages. The word esbat actually means "rejoicing".

The moon is a powerful symbol for many peoples, for witches and pagans it represents feminine energies, the Goddess and the cycles of life: birth, growth, blossoming, decline, death and rebirth. For modern witches the moon cycle suggests the three major phases of the Goddess: Maiden, Mother and Crone.

Nature is also affected by the moon in many ways that are still poorly understood by science. Its cycle affects tides, moods, and even plants. There are times in the lunar phases that are more favorable for planting and harvesting for different types of crops. Thus, since the dawn of time, the festivities and rites of witches and pagans have been affected by the cycle of the moon.

Traditionally, it was during the nights of esbat that witches gathered to take advantage of the beneficial and powerful energy of the moon in their various activities. We take advantage of the full moon ceremony to get together and enjoy a moment of rejoicing with our loved ones, leaving our worries behind us, doing introspection, looking back on the month that has just passed, giving thanks for the good things that have happened and purifying ourselves of negative events, celebrating magical rites and rituals, creating charms and spells, doing divination, meditating, making our blessings, purifications, etc.
